This program a slight modification of MrBayes to do simulated annealing maximum likelihood tree searches (Bayes is credited with inventing Bayesian statistics, Fisher with inventing likelihood). I have a paper that describes it in prep, and I'm holding off on widespread distribution of the program until that paper's been peer-reviewed (since there may be comments that improve the paper). That said, the source is available on Google Code and a working citation for the program may be

Potential students: Our lab needs motivated students. Deadline for grad students is Dec. 15, annually. See info here. Accepted students are guaranteed funding through TAships, though other funds may be sought, too. Though our lab is mostly about creating and applying tools in order to understand evolutionary questions, it's possible (and often a good idea) for a student to be jointly advised in a more empirical lab.
